Ageism or discrimination has reared its ugly head in the heartland. I live in a relatively large Midwestern city in Iowa. I have now three times volunteered with the local LGBT center, as well as a state agency, without a call back or any interest in my help, experience, talents, or insight. I am in a 30 year gay relationship, was previously in a straight marriage, have three wonderful grown children, and work in the death care industry. I have much to offer, and want to. The brick wall seems to be I am "not from here". I moved here from California ten years ago, and not being a "local", I have found an impenetrable wall. I'm saddened by that.
