As a "closeted gay man" from the first 35 or so years of my life, and one who tried to put on the mantle of a traditional heterosexual life, it is easy to recognize the same in Lewis. He lived in a time where he would NOT have been accepted, nor would he have been comfortable, in being openly gay. His long lasting associations and friendships are easily seen as his disguises for living his "gay side" life. Straight folks who have never had or yielded to a "gay" experience simply cannot conceive that this duality exists in many. I am very comfortable in seeing a more gender fluid acceptance of anyone's life.
