I found so much to relate to from your story that also applies to my family in "southern Oklahoma". Christianity is supposedly a bedrock, but their actions are so "unchristian". I'm not religious, but I will stack my spiritual nature up against their "religious" nature any day. And the "voting against their best interest " thing is just so hard to reconcile.
