“Friendship isn’t about who you’ve known the longest. It’s about who walked into your life, said “I’m here for you” and proved it.” (unknown)

Some lessons in life are hard for us to accept. One of the hardest lessons for me was to learn that some friendships run their course. They have a “shelf-life.” A very few friendships lack that “shelf life” timeline that others seem to have and those friendships are the ones that carry you through life. I have been writing about some of the people who have influenced and even saved me at critical points in my life story, and I recently wrote about some of my teachers who had amazing impacts on me as a young person. Now a few words on friends.

When college days hit after high school, I arrived at Oklahoma State University fresh from a small, rural town. I first roomed with a high school buddy, and that turned out to be one of those friendships that did indeed have a “shelf life” that was soon to expire. The second semester of my Freshman year found me living on my own in another dorm, mostly from issues of just finding out that we didn’t have a lot in common. I was working every spare minute, and he was gone to his girlfriend’s college about two hours away every spare minute. We grew apart as roommates very quickly.
