“A room without books is like a body without a soul” Cicero.

A Roman philosopher from well over 2000 years ago certainly had the wisdom of the ages. Books have played such an important role in my life and the current trend of book bans and rewriting of history is so distressing to so many of us who love our books, our history, and the sanctity of preserving classic writings.

One such example has been in my personal library for well over 50 years. The beautiful story of Evangeline and Gabriel. I hope the book will stay alive to be discovered over and over again through history and always available for young readers.

Evangeline, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, is a tale of Acadie, the remote and fertile farming land in the far north, encompassing parts of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and even parts of the state of Maine. This beautiful narrative, in unrhymed verse, tells the story of the young and beautiful Evangeline Bellefontaine and the noble Gabriel Lajeunesse, childhood friends living in Grand-Pré, Nova Scotia.

These two young people are forcibly separated at the time of the Acadian exile. As the British begin deporting Acadians from their ancestral homeland, the young lovers are torn apart on their wedding day, in the chaos of forced removal of the Acadians from their settled homes and…
