Today I read a great story on MEDIUM about the surprises that come with aging. I realized that most of the stories I was reading were from those among us who are turning 60. I was empathizing and nodding in agreement then the realization hit me that I am turning 70! What happened to the 60s? How did I arrive at this juncture without realizing it? I knew that the 50s went by in a whirlwind. My 50’s had been a time of career-ending, moving, then moving again, and kids all leaving the nest.

The early age years of my 60s were about getting established in a new career that accommodated my health limitations and adjusting back to life in the Midwest after having lived my post-college years in California. Life-changing surgeries for both me and my husband. Leaving old friends on the West Coast and making new friends in the Midwest. The terrible loss of our first original fur babies in our family and the adjustment to the successive generation that now rules our household.

The passage of my sixties went unnoticed because the demands were great in making all of these adjustments. And now I am noticing physical changes that are starting to become a reality. We both realized about three years ago that a bathroom on the first floor was a necessity in our old post-Civil War era home. So, we got that done. But now, stairs for me are a real issue.
