My answer would be that you pinpointed both of my feelings exactly. I also lived in a time where being gay was illegal, and I could have been punished or "put away" in an asylum for being gay. I learned to live DEEP in the closet until my late thirties. My gay uncle died a few years ago, more of Graham's age, and he fit your descriptions of being gay during that time exactly.
